Northvolt plans to reduce workforce in Sweden by a quarter in order to keep cell production afloat

Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå, Sweden

Sweden – Following its announcement last month that it would significantly scale back its battery cell manufacturing plans, Northvolt AB of Stockholm, Sweden has since announced it will look to lay off approximately 1,600 employees across three sites, as it restructures its business to adapt to low demand for electric vehicles in Europe.

The company has decided to terminate its plans to expand cell production at its flagship ‘Northvolt Ett’ site by an additional 30 GWh of capacity. Instead, it will focus on ramping up production at the existing plant to achieve an annual capacity of 16 GWh only. As a result, the company intends to make 1,000 roles redundant at the gigafactory in Skellefteå.
