Tual awarded British government funding for swappable power bank technology

Tual 180-kWh power bank

UK – New company Tual Technology Ltd of Glasgow, UK has won two government awards to commercialise and trial its swappable power bank for battery electric vehicles, designed to extend their range and reduce time spent recharging.

Tual’s power bank is placed in the cargo space of a van or truck and sits against the bulkhead. While the vehicle is stationary – for example, when loading or unloading cargo – the power bank recharges the traction battery, effectively acting as a range extender. It can then be taken out of the vehicle at the end of a shift and recharged in readiness for the next shift. According to Tual, inserting and removing the power bank takes about ninety seconds, making it an easy and flexible way of extending vehicle range and reducing time spent idling at the charging station.
