USA - Heavy-duty transit bus manufacturer, GILLIG LLC, based in Livermore, California, has delivered 24 electric buses to the Portland state-owned public transit agency, the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District. This is part of TriMet’s push to transition to a zero-emissions fleet by 2040. The first Gen 3 Battery Electric buses began operation on Line 9-Powell. The Gen 3 Battery Electric buses are offered in two lengths (35 and 40 ft), featuring a Cummins EV powertrain and an Akasol (BorgWarner) AKASystem 9 AKM 150 CYC battery system for the following available capacity configurations: 490 kWh, 588 kWh and 686 kWh.
These next-gen buses have improved specifications, featuring 33% more battery capacity compared to earlier models. They are equipped with six lithium-ion battery packs, providing a range of over 150 miles (241 km) on a single charge. Additionally, they feature fast charging capability through overhead charging rails, allowing them to charge while on the go. The procurement was supported by federal grants to fund both the vehicles and the necessary charging infrastructure. USD 1.6 billion in funding has been made available by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the Low- and No-Emission (Low-No) Vehicle programmes developed in 2016 to support upgrading mass transit fleets to more efficient, less polluting vehicles.
