Schaeffler to cease bearings production in Austria

Schaeffler's bearings facility in Berndorf, Austria

Germany / Austria – Further to its announcement last month that it would terminate 4,700 jobs in Europe, motion technology specialist Schaeffler AG of Herzogenaurach, Bavaria, Germany has said it will cease production of bearings at its site in Berndorf, Lower Austria due to “intense cost and price pressures” from growing Asian competition.

Schaeffler’s Berndorf location produces wheel bearings, wheel hub modules, and gearbox bearings for heavy-duty trucks, agricultural tractors, and construction machinery. The German company said it will move production of these parts to “more cost-effective locations” in its manufacturing network, including the Taoyuan site in China and a facility in Kysuce, Slovakia. Some of the products made in Brasov, Romania will also be transferred elsewhere.
