Cummins and Allison partner on new electric hybrid drivetrain for the transit bus market

eGen Flex

USA – Drivetrain manufacturer Cummins Inc of Columbus, Indiana and gearbox and e-axle manufacturer Allison Transmission Inc have partnered to develop an advanced electric hybrid drivetrain, designed for transit buses. Set to be launched in 2027, the system integrates the Cummins B-Series engine with Allison's eGen Flex electric hybrid (parallel) propulsion technology, meeting the EPA's Phase 3 greenhouse gas emissions standards for heavy-duty vehicles will take effect beginning in model year 2027.

The eGen Flex system can operate up to 50% of a typical bus route in engine-off mode, significantly reducing emissions and noise in urban areas. It features geofencing technology, which automatically activates an electric-only mode in zero-emission zones. This drivetrain is aimed at providing a flexible solution that balances performance, reliability, and greenhouse gas emissions.
