Microvast achieves “breakthrough” in solid-state battery technology

USAMicrovast Holdings Inc of Stafford, Texas has announced what it calls a “breakthrough” in the development of solid-state battery cells, a development which it claims will lead to safer, more energy dense, and more efficient batteries.

Microvast claims that it has developed battery cells that contain no liquid electrolytes whatsoever. A lithium-ion or semi-solid-state cell is “constrained” by the limitations of a liquid electrolyte, meaning they can operate at nominal voltages of 3.2V to 3.7V per cell only. A higher voltage would decompose the cell. However, with an “all-solid-state” chemistry, a single cell can operate at “dozens of volts”.
