SAG receives type approval for liquid hydrogen tanks after fire testing

Bonfire test with SAG liquid hydrogen tank system

Austria – At the end of last year, SAG Austria GmbH of Lend, Salzburg announced that it received European type approval for an aluminium fuel tank system for carrying liquid hydrogen which is capable of withstanding an external temperature of up to 1,000 degrees Celsius.

The company tested the fuel tank by lighting a bonfire directly underneath, which SAG says reached a maximum temperature of 1,000 degrees. The test lasted for more than two hours, after which the tank – filled with liquid hydrogen – showed no evidence of structural damage and with internal pressure below risk level. SAG also demonstrated the use of the tank’s safety valves by deliberately damaging the vacuum insulation: the valves safely dissipated the excess pressure which resulted from the damage.
