Scania to supply used sand from engine foundry to Weber Saint-Gobain

Used sand produced as a byproduct of engine casting

Sweden / FranceScania AB, a commercial vehicle manufacturer and subsidiary of Traton based in Södertälje, Sweden, has agreed to supply used sand from its foundry to ‘Weber’, the mortar production brand of French glassmaker and construction materials company Compagnie de Saint-Gobain SA.

Scania has committed to supplying Weber this year with approximately 20,000 tonnes of used sand from its foundry in Södertälje, a waste byproduct from the casting of engine components which would ordinarily be sent to landfill. Normally, Weber would produce mortar with “virgin” sand; by reusing sand from Scania’s foundry, both companies hope to reduce their environmental impact by decreasing the levels of raw material extraction and waste produced by their factories.
