UK – Late last year, the eFREIGHT 2030 consortium deployed its first electric heavy goods vehicle (eHGV), a 42-tonne Renault Trucks E-Tech T 4x2 which was delivered to Welch's Transport, a freight and logistics company based in Duxford, Cambridgeshire. This vehicle is being utilised for regional distribution and long-haul deliveries as part of a UK-funded government project to demonstrate how battery-electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) can effectively replace conventional HGVs at scale on the UK road network. This deployment marks a significant milestone in the UK's efforts to decarbonise road freight and demonstrates the practical application of electric HGVs in commercial operations.
The eFREIGHT 2030 is part of the UK's Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme, funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. The consortium plans to introduce 100 eHGV tractor units and establish 32 new charging locations over a multi-year real-world evaluation to shape the future of zero-emission transport.
