Aurora launches autonomous driving in Texas

Aurora’s self-driving truck

USA – Start-up software company, Aurora Innovations Inc of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has officially launched its commercial self-driving trucking service in Texas, marking a significant milestone in the company’s history. The company is now operating SAE Level 4 autonomous Class 8 trucks (on behalf of Uber Freight) between Dallas and Houston, completing over 1,200 miles (1931 km) without a human driver on board. This deployment signifies the first commercial operation of driverless heavy-duty trucks on public roads in the United States. Aurora plans to expand its driverless operations to include routes to El Paso, Texas, and Phoenix, Arizona, by the end of 2025.

The relevance of this development lies in its potential to address critical challenges in the freight industry, such as driver shortages and the need for increased efficiency, thus reducing operational costs for fleet owners.
