Germany – Through its subsidiaries Vehicle Systems Engineering B.V. (V.S.E.) and HEMSCHEIDT Fahrwerktechnik GmbH & Co. KG*, the Hübner GmbH & Co. KG (Hübner Group) of Kassel, Germany has been developing a hydropneumatic suspension** and damping system tailored for commercial vehicles, which eliminates the need for compressed air, offering enhanced energy efficiency and ride comfort. This product is being designed to be supplied as a complete unit to OEMs, with series production expected by 2030.

T&BB spoke to Rainer Eickhoff, Head of Sales HEMSCHEIDT Fahrwerktechnik, who explained to us that the hydropneumatic suspension system is particularly beneficial for electric buses and other commercial vehicles. “Unlike traditional air suspension systems that rely on compressed air, hydropneumatic systems use oil as the hydraulic fluid, which is continually reused within a closed system.” By eliminating the need for compressed air, the system reduces energy consumption, thereby extending the range of electric vehicles. Moreover, the system’s ability to quickly adjust to load changes ensures a level ride, enhancing passenger comfort and vehicle handling. Finally, by eliminating bulky air compressors and associated components, the system frees up valuable space within the vehicle chassis.
