EU considers toll exemption for zero-emission HGVs

Belgium – The EU Commission is currently reviewing a proposal to exempt zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles (ZEVs), such as electric and hydrogen-powered trucks, from road tolls across EU member states. The move forms part of a broader strategy to decarbonise road freight and make zero-emission trucks more cost-competitive with diesel models.

The exemption proposal is included in the revised Eurovignette Directive. If adopted, the measure could significantly reduce the total cost of ownership for fleet operators considering electrification. The proposal must be approved by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. A final vote is expected by early 2026, following ongoing consultations.
