FlixBus to expand use of Trailar solar panels following successful pilots

FlixBus coach with Trailar solar panels on the roof

UK / GermanyTrailar Ltd of Oldham, UK has announced that its partner, German intercity travel provider Flix SE, has agreed to employ Trailar’s solar technology in its “FlixBus” coach fleet, following a successful series of pilots over four years.

By installing Trailar solar panels on the roof, Flix hopes to reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of its diesel coaches. According to Trailar, pilot tests proved that each vehicle could reduce its fuel usage by up to 1,040 litres and its CO2 emissions by up to 2.8 tonnes per year by drawing power from the solar panels. Trailar says that its “Solar Solution” achieves these savings by reducing the output of the vehicle alternator during the drive cycle, decreasing the resistance and drag on the engine and thus reducing fuel consumption.
