Electric buses are gaining traction in parts of Africa

BYD K6

Kenya / Rwanda – BasiGo, the Nairobi-based electric bus leasing company founded in 2021 by Jit Bhattacharya and Jonathan Green, has reached a milestone with the deployment of its 100th electric bus across Kenya and Rwanda, making it one of the largest e-bus operations in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to the company. These buses are majority built by Chinese OEMs and include imported BYD K6 e-buses.

In Kenya, buses primarily serve urban and regional routes in Nairobi, while in Rwanda, BasiGo has delivered an initial batch of 28 buses for both city and inter-city operations, with a charging and service depot in Kigali, upgraded to accommodate over 30 buses nightly.
