California resists federal climate rollbacks

California Governor Gavin Newsom

USA – California Governor Gavin Newsom has formally opposed the Trump administration’s plan to weaken national climate and vehicle pollution standards, sending a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on September 22. Newsom warned that “reversing clean air protections would undermine state-level emissions targets and increase public health risks, while stressing California’s authority to set stricter rules under the Clean Air Act”.

At the same time, the state confirmed it will not pursue a supplemental California EV tax credit to mirror the federal USD 7,500 scheme. Instead, resources will be redirected toward charging infrastructure and targeted rebates for low- and moderate-income households. Officials argue this approach avoids consumer confusion and better supports long-term market adoption.
