Scania biomethane powered coach goes on trial with São Paulo-based bus operator

Biomethane powered ScaniaK320 coach chassis with Marcopolo body.

Brazil - Viação Santa Cruz, a São Paulo-based bus operator, has begun testing a coach featuring a Scania K320 chassis and Marcopolo body with a 320-hp Otto-cycle natural gas/biomethane engine, on the São Paulo-Campinas route in Brazil. With the inaugural trip taking place on September 1, the vehicle is now operating four times a day between the Barra Funda terminal in São Paulo and the Campinas bus station. The project is a partnership between Santa Cruz, Scania, and Comgás.

This initiative expands the various biomethane truck and city bus projects, which followed an agreement between Scania and Comgás in 2021. Francisco Mazon, CEO of Viação Santa Cruz, stating that the tests will evaluate several aspects, such as fuelling, operation, and productivity, remarked: "We believe in a new energy matrix for our business. The reality is that we want to invest in this decarbonization process, using natural gas first and biomethane later. I believe this is the most viable option for our company at this time. The operating costs should be lower, although the vehicle acquisition cost is still higher. We will evaluate how long this will take to be diluted. We will compare them with diesel operations and identify potential advantages. If the results are positive, as I believe they will be, we can consider a larger operation and an increase in the biomethane-powered bus fleet."
