Nikola ramps up investment in fuel cell technology research

USA - Trevor Milton, Nikola CEO and founder of electric truck concern, Nikola Motor Company of Phoenix, Arizona, USA at an event held at its WestWorld facility in Scottsdale, Arizona, said the company was actively pursuing hydrogen as a ubiquitous fuel for its electric vehicles and that it had just committed to making an initial investment of USD16m to build Nikola's new fuel cell development laboratory and that staged investments in the new facility was expected to exceed several hundred million dollars. Milton also announced installation of its first hydrogen refuelling plant at its Phoenix location and said it was working with other OEMs and industry partners to develop a hydrogen refuelling system for heavy-duty vehicles that can refuel in less than 15 minutes. This consortium has been set up to develop a standard for hydrogen fuelling dispensing systems so that any operator in future can gain access to hydrogen fuel - see article in this issue.

Nikola has partnered with fleet operators and rental companies, Ryder Systems Inc and Thompson Machinery to offer sales, service and warranty through their over 800 locations across North America.
