MAN, VHH and VW joint research into second-life batteries and storage

Germany – CV builder, MAN Truck & Bus SE of Munich, operator Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg Holstein of Hamburg and automotive giant, Volkswagen AG of Wolfsburg are involved in a joint research project to evaluate the potential of ‘used’ or ‘second-life’ batteries as a way of storing electricity.

A container with a total capacity of 500kWh has been connected to the depot charging network at the VHH depot in Hamburg and it is being evaluated as to how used batteries behave after initial use in vehicles and then as a stationary energy storage system, under real-world operating conditions.
