South Korea / IndiaTata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle Company, based in Gunsan, the South Korean subsidiary of India’s Tata Motors Ltd, in February announced a plan to strengthen its truck line-up over the next few years as part of an initiative to reverse a sharp decline in recent sales.

Tata-Daewoo, which was taken over by Tata Motors in 2004, saw its sales in South Korea decline by more than 20% to 3,742 units last year, which followed an even sharper decline of almost 39% in 2018 to 4,705 units. At present, the company sells medium and heavy trucks in the 8 to 25 tons gvw segment, which is dominated by Hyundai and global truck-makers such as Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz and MAN. Its plant in Gunsan has a production capacity of over 23,000 medium and heavy trucks a year.
