GermanyMercedes-Benz Trucks, a brand subsidiary of Daimler Trucks AG of Stuttgart is working on a programme to improve its analysis of accident scenarios by reconstructing real accidents through computer simulation. Understanding the circumstances leading to accidents is essential to being able to handle the numerous traffic situations, especially with the evolution to automated driving, the company said.

Commenting on this R&D project, Kay Morschheuser, head of CV Accident Analyses at Mercedes-Benz Trucks: "In future we will reconstruct real accidents on the computer as a complement to the crash test. The combination of crash simulation and accident reconstruction offers an opportunity to examine accidents more specifically and in more detail with freely selected parameters, allowing better understanding of the mechanisms in an actual accident.”
