Japan - Medium and heavy-duty truck sales show signs of recovery in Q4

Japan - Japan’s medium and heavy truck market over 4.5 tons gvw increased by almost 13% to 40,062 units in the fourth quarter of 2020 after declining by almost 20% to 35,518 units a year earlier, reflecting a sharp rebound in fixed investment and exports. Full-year sales declined by almost 12% to 160,678 from 182,391 units in 2019.

Market leader Isuzu saw its sales fall by almost 12% to 55,565 units in 2020 from 62,910 units in the previous year, followed by Hino with a similar decline to 48,786 units. Mitsubishi-Fuso’s sales plunged by 20% to 20,354 units, while Toyota’s sales fell by over 10% to 20,300 units.
