Sluggish sales in Japan during Q1 in 2021 as economy contracts

Japan - The Japanese market for commercial vehicles over 2 tons gvw expanded by just 1.4% year-on-year to 118,511 units in the first quarter of 2021 from 116,830 units in the same period of last year, based on data released by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA).  

The country’s economy contacted by 1.3% quarter-on-quarter in the January-March period after two quarters of strong growth – when the economy rebounded from the initial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Growth in the fourth quarter of 2020 was confirmed at 2.8% quarter-on-quarter and 12.7% from weak year-earlier levels.
