Daimler Truck to repurpose powertrain plants for production of electric drive components

GermanyDaimler Truck AG, the commercial vehicle division of Daimler AG of Stuttgart, is to repurpose its three Mercedes-Benz powertrain plants to produce electric drive components, including those for hydrogen-based fuel cell drives, battery technologies, and electric drive systems, following an agreement reached between Daimler Truck and the works council.

This entails a shift from the German plants’ current focus on combustion engine technologies: The plant at Gaggenau will develop partly into a competence centre for electric drive components and partly into an assembly line for hydrogen-based fuel cell drive components; the plant at Kassel will become a competence centre for electric drive systems; and the plant at Mannheim will specialise in battery technologies and high-voltage-systems, with the aim of developing a pilot battery cell production line.
