Japan - Japan’s market for commercial vehicles over 2 tons gvw declined slightly to 100,778 units in the third quarter of 2021 from an already weak 101,522 units a year earlier, based on data released by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA).

The economy went into reverse in the third quarter of 2021, with GDP shrinking by a worse-than-expected 3.0% year-on-year due to weaking private consumption caused by social and business restrictions, put in place under the government’s state of emergency to slow the recent surge in cases of COVID-19. Supply-chain bottlenecks affected manufacturing output, with the automotive industry the worst affected.
