USA – The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co, based in Akron, Ohio, has announced a partnership with Monolith Corp of Lincoln, Nebraska, for the development and use of carbon black from methane/biomethane in the production of tyres.

Carbon black is a key ingredient in rubber tyres, constituting around 15-20% by weight of a conventional car tyre. However, carbon black is traditionally produced from the combustion of fossil fuels such as residual oil or coal tar oil. Consequently, the two aim to employ Monolith’s plasma-based methane pyrolysis process which produces only carbon and hydrogen from biomethane.
