USA – The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co of Akron, Ohio, has released a demonstration tyre which it claims is 70% composed of sustainable materials. In 2020, the firm set a goal of introducing the first 100% sustainable-material tyre by 2030, stating that this product marks a significant milestone towards this goal.

Carbon black, a key ingredient in tyre production, is traditionally sourced from petroleum combustion. Goodyear’s tyre incorporates three different carbon blacks produced from methane, carbon-dioxide, and plant-based oil. The firm has also utilised soybean oil to help maintain the tyre’s pliability in changing temperatures. Goodyear states that the environmental impact of the oil is limited due to the large surpluses available from food production. In addition, the tyre has incorporated recycled polyester from plastic waste to be used for tyre cords.
