Canada / USA – Ballard Power Systems, based in Vancouver, Canada, and Chart Industries Inc of Atlanta, USA, have announced the successful test of a fuel cell powered by liquid hydrogen. The firms added that they will work to identify a potential demonstrator for liquid hydrogen road testing over the coming months.

During the test conducted at Chart’s hydrogen test facility in Minnesota, USA, a Ballard FCmove-HD fuel cell was paired with a Chart HLH2 liquid hydrogen fuel system. The firms stated that liquid hydrogen has significant space, weight, and range advantages over gaseous hydrogen which they claim can allow for up to double the range without an impact on vehicle payload. In addition, they state that the tanks are suitable across long-distance applications such as truck, coach, bus, rail, and marine.
