Bus sales see slow recovery in Italy

Italy – Sales of buses and coaches in Italy are experiencing a slow recovery from the pandemic-induced slump in 2020. Sales increased by 10.4% in 2021, from 3,145 units to 3,471, but they remain well short of 2019 sales of 4,211 units (a 17.6% decrease from 2019 to 2021), according to the Italian Automotive Association – ANFIA . Italy’s bus market is in 4th place in Europe, holding a 9.8% share.
18.8% of buses sold in Italy were powered by alternative drivelines, much below the 28.6% average across Europe. This is due to the weaker market for electric drivelines in Italy: battery-electric buses accounted for just 5.3% of Italian sales, whereas electric buses (battery and fuel-cell electric) made up 10.8% of sales across the continent. 7.7% and 5.8% of buses were gas and hybrid in Italy, compared to 8.8% and 9% in Europe as a whole; this testifies to the relative strength of the gas vehicle market in Italy, which outperformed electric vehicles across every CV segment.
