Germany – Multiple German manufacturing companies, including MAN Truck & Bus, Knorr-Bremse, and Bosch, are working together in a research and development project with the aim of putting autonomous trucks on motorways by the middle of the decade.

‘ATLAS-L4’ (“Automated Transport between Logistics centres on highways, Level 4”) is a project to develop autonomous trucks that can operate safely and efficiently on certain public highways and expressways. ATLAS-L4 is supported by funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, with the view of improving road safety and reducing fuel consumption through the introduction of autonomous trucks. Moreover, it is hoped that the wider adoption of autonomous vehicles in the future will help to ease the pressure of chronic driver shortages.
