MAN successfully demonstrates bus with fully-automated passenger stop approach

Bus trialled by MAN at Aldenhoven Testing Center

GermanyMAN Truck & Bus SE, a subsidiary of the Traton Group based in Munich, Bavaria, announced that it successfully tested a prototype city bus fitted with technology which allows it to approach bus stops autonomously and with higher precision than in manual drive.

For around 48 months, MAN has worked on an autonomous driving system which allows the bus to independently manoeuvre itself into place at a designated stop. The driver does not need to take any action; the bus is able to assess its surroundings by means of sensors to detect other vehicles and pedestrians. Using global positioning, the bus can identify its location in relation to the stop to within a few centimetres. After completing the stop, the driver resumes control of the vehicle. The bus is also able to communicate with other autonomous vehicles on the road, notifying them via an electric signal when the bus enters and leaves the stop so that they slow down in time.
