Voith and Keyou present prototype hydrogen bus at IAA 2022

Prototype hydrogen bus developed by Voith and Keyou

Germany – At IAA Transportation 2022 in Hanover, Voith GmbH & Co KGaA and Keyou GmbH presented a prototype bus fitted with a hydrogen combustion engine and a “mild-hybrid” transmission with energy recuperation capabilities.

The 12-metre bus, built on a chassis supplied by an unnamed European manufacturer, is fitted with a diesel engine which Keyou has converted to run on hydrogen. Connected to the engine is a DIWA NXT automatic transmission supplied by Voith. Its ‘central recuperation unit’ (CRU) recovers energy during braking, providing up to 35 kW of power at 48V. In the prototype bus, the CRU supports vehicle start up.
