Scania and Rio Tinto announce long-term collaboration to develop autonomous mining trucks

Autonomous mining truck trialled at Rio Tinto mine in Western Australia

Sweden / AustraliaScania AB, a subsidiary of the Traton Group based in Södertälje, Sweden, has announced a research and development partnership with Anglo-Australian metals and mining corporation Rio Tinto Group of London, UK, concentrated on autonomous trucks for mining operations in Australia.

Scania and Rio Tinto reportedly began trials of autonomous trucks in April 2022: these 40-tonne-payload vehicles successfully achieved driverless operations in a simulated load and haul cycle environment, according to Scania. The two companies have pledged to continue developing the technology, focusing on operations at Rio Tinto’s iron ore mine, called Channar mine, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
