GermanyMAN Truck & Bus SE, a subsidiary of the Traton Group based in Munich, Bavaria, has announced it is taking part in a research project into second-life usage of batteries taken from electric trucks once they have outlived their use in powering vehicles.

MAN says they are working with various partners and the University of Kassel to evaluate whether used truck batteries are suitable for stationary energy storage applications. Around 120 battery packs with capacities of 18.6 kWh will be handed over to an unnamed energy storage firm; these packs originate from the first field tests of battery-electric trucks which MAN carried out in Austria back in 2018. The used batteries will be employed in “peak shaving”, or reducing energy demand during peak usage times, for industrial purposes. The project will assess battery safety and performance. Additionally, there is scope to initiate another project testing batteries from MAN Lion’s City E buses.
