NFI to receive USD187m in support amid ongoing financial difficulties

Canada – In December, the NFI Group of Winnipeg, Manitoba, which owns bus and coach brands such as New Flyer, MCI, and Alexander Dennis, announced that it is set to receive a support package worth approximately USD187m from state and federal governments, owing to longstanding financial difficulties.

NFI reported in its 2021 results a 3% fall in its revenues. The performance was chalked up to disruptions in the supply chain as well as the ongoing repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Paul Soubry, President and CEO of the group, predicted that supply chain-related problems would continue into 2022. Soubry has been borne out by the group’s performance over the first three quarters of 2022: according to NFI, orders are high – reportedly amounting to USD5bn – but components supply is restricted, making it difficult for the firm to fulfil these orders. NFI has suffered from poor cash flow, and in June 2022 it announced it would be amending its credit facilities to ease its financial pressures; the amendments happened on 29 July.
