The Sainsburys / Electra H2 Truck trials completed

UK – In September last year, T&BB brought you the news that UK supermarket giant, Sainsburys, had begun trials of the refrigerated 19-tonne Electra H2 truck (manufactured by Electra Commercial Vehicles Ltd) in Stockton on Tees as part of the Tees Valley Hydrogen Vehicle Project using the hydrogen refuelling station at the Teesside international airport. In January 2023 Electra announced the successful completion of this trial.
The Electra eCargo Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) travelled 208 miles (334 km) a day from the supermarket’s depot in Sherburn-on-Elmet to Newcastle and then back again. Electra calculated that a diesel truck making that exact same voyage would emit an average of 314kg of CO2, with data indicating that the HGV used approximately 65% of its hydrogen capacity per trip, giving it an approximate operational daily range of 320 miles (514 km) on one fill of hydrogen. The Sainsburys drivers reported that the truck was quiet during operation, handled the roads well and provided more than enough range for the job at hand.
