GermanyZF Friedrichshafen AG of Friedrichshafen, Baden-Württemberg announced that its Commercial Vehicle Solutions (CVS) division has invested in 5G technology at its CV test track in Jeversen, Lower Saxony in order to improve testing of autonomous and connected vehicle technologies.

5G is the latest generation of technical standards for broadband cellular networks which telecommunications firms began deploying in 2019. It will eventually replace the current 4G standard, meaning that technologies currently in development need to ensure compatibility with 5G to avoid redundancy in the near future. Additionally, ZF states that upgrading to 5G will ensure that demands for seamless connectivity and large data transfers between vehicles and other nodes in the network are met at its test track. Meeting these needs is crucial to effectively testing level 4 and 5 autonomous vehicles, ZF argues.
