- Mission / Vision Statement
-
ZF’s Commercial Vehicle Solutions (CVS) division is shaping the future of commercial transportation ecosystems. ZF’s CVS division makes commercial vehicles safer, smarter and sustainable to achieve the vision of zero accidents and zero emissions. With its comprehensive technology portfolio, ZF CVS offers tailored solutions for every step of an OEM and fleets’ transformation journey, helping solve complex problems while creating long-term value. ZF CVS’s unique capability to digitalize commercial vehicle systems solutions and enhance vehicle intelligence is paving the way towards the commercial vehicle of the future. ZF CVS unites ZF’s former Commercial Vehicle Technology and Commercial Vehicle Control Systems divisions, the latter being formed following ZF’s acquisition of WABCO in Spring 2020.Â
- Strategy
-
ZF wants to grow in the areas where the company is particularly strong and successfully positioned. Our approach is to develop technologies and platforms once and deploy them across different product segments. We benefit from the fact that no other supplier covers as many mobility areas as ZF. Our key to success is offering the broadest product and technology portfolio on the market as well as the ability not only to deliver products but also to integrate them into our customers' system landscapes and vehicle environment.
We have strengths across numerous technology fields. Over the next few years we will focus on advancing the following technology segments:
Chassis technologies for all vehicle segments, e.g. brake-by-wire, steer-by-wire
Driveline technologies including e-mobility technologies
Safety systems, including ADAS technologies
Software and digitalization
Digital and traditional service models and spare parts (aftermarket)
- Sustainability Goals
-
Sustainability is an integral part of our ZF Group strategy which sets a target of complete climate neutrality by 2040. However, sustainability means far more to us than climate protection. In addition to climate and nature, we also focus on the dimensions of people and lasting values. As a globally active technology company, we also take on responsibility along the entire value chain – for our employees and locations, as well as throughout our supply chain and for our products. Thanks to intensive and focused investment in research and development, we promote the topic of sustainable mobility in general.
Key Developments
2022
ZF launched its new Commercial Vehicles Solutions division, creating the world's largest commercial vehicles supplier. The new division united ZF’s former Commercial Vehicle Technology and Commercial Vehicle Control Systems divisions, the latter of which was formed from ZF’s May 2020 acquisition of WABCO. ZF’s Commercial Vehicle Solutions division is supported by around 25,000 employees based across 61 locations in 28 countries.
2015
In 2015 ZF successfully integrated TRW into the group, creating the new ZF TRW division focusing on active and passive safety technology. The combined portfolio included ZF's powertrain and chassis technologies such as e-mobility solutions and electronics with the safety, steering, braking and autonomous driving technologies of TRW. The combination provided a powerful offering enabling the industry to develop key automated driving technologies while improving safety and fuel efficiency.

- Service
- Software Update Management System
- Sector
- Trailers
- Description
-
ZF's Software Update Management System simplifies safe software updates for trailer manufacturers in line with legal requirements.
Thanks to ZF's extensive industry expertise, ZF offers a customer-focused system for trailer manufacturers enabling them to gain compliance with UN/ECE R156 requirements for safe software updates. As a leader in trailer technologies, ZF has already met the ISO 24089 standards for software update engineering, confirming its products comply with the R156 regulation standard.
To comply with UN/ECE R156, trailer manufacturers must maintain a certified Software Update Management System (SUMS). This requires a structured, well-documented process for managing software updates, along with regular audits and certification renewal every three years.
Unlike previous regulations, R156 places full responsibility on OEMs, making an efficient compliance strategy essential. The main challenge is meeting strict requirements within the given timeframe. As a first step, our certification already covers a range of ZF trailer products, including the ZF SCALAR SUMS SaaS (Software as a Service). This assures trailer OEMs that ZF's products support their compliance with the regulatory requirements for managing software updates (SUMS) under UNECE R156. Because we apply the same software engineering processes, project management techniques and strict documentation standards across the CVS division, additional trailer, truck and bus products can be added to the certification.
