Germany / Canada / SpainVolkswagen AG, an automotive corporation and parent of Traton Group based in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, Germany, announced that its battery subsidiary, PowerCo SE, will build a gigafactory for EV battery cells in St Thomas, Ontario, Canada.

PowerCo plans to begin production of battery cells in Canada by 2027. The cells will supply group vehicles made in North America.1 The decision follows on from a Memorandum of Understanding agreed late last year with Umicore to procure cathode and precursor materials for batteries made in Canada. At that time, Volkswagen indicated that Canada offered “high sustainability standards and ideal economic conditions” for a cell gigafactory.
