Germany / SwitzerlandZF Friedrichshafen AG, a component and mobility systems manufacturer based in Friedrichshafen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, has announced a long-term agreement with multinational semiconductor manufacturer STMicroelectronics NV, headquartered in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, Switzerland, for the supply of silicon carbide devices for making power inverters.

From 2025, STMicroelectronics will begin supplying ZF with an unspecified number (in the “double-digit millions”) of silicon carbide MOSFET (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor) devices. ZF will receive a steady stream of components which it requires to make inverters for automotives. Also from 2025, ZF says it will launch series production of a new modular inverter architecture which it will integrate in various products, including components for electric vehicles. Stephan von Schuckmann, member of the ZF Board of Management responsible for electromobility and materials management, claims that ZF’s orderbook for e-mobility products until 2030 amounts to more than EUR30bn. ZF therefore needs a reliable supply of silicon carbide devices to fulfil these orders.
