BYD hoping to cash in on the American clean bus program

The BYD Type D electric school bus

USA – In a strategy to drive American demand for its electric school buses, BYD North America Inc, the US subsidiary of Shenzhen-based BYD Auto Co Ltd, headquartered in Los Angeles, California, announced that it will offer potential U.S. customers, application assistance in applying for funding through the 2023 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Clean School Bus Grant Program*. The USD 5 billion / 5-year program provides funding to replace 500,000 internal combustion school buses with zero-emission school buses to qualified school districts intent on offering cleaner transportation alternatives. 2023 sees USD 400 million of funding in this round with BYD offering two eligible battery electric school bus models under the program: The Achiever (Type A) and the Dreamer (Type D).

The EPA made clear that funding awards are dependent on the bus fuel type, bus class size, number of buses being replaced and prioritisation status of the district.
