GermanyZF Friedrichshafen AG of Friedrichshafen, Baden-Württemberg has announced the development of a magnet-free electric motor, following a unique design which does not require any rare earths.1

Although not the first manufacturer to come up with an alternative to a permanent-magnet motor, ZF’s motor is designed differently to “separately excited synchronous motors” available on the market. Giving its design the name of “In-Rotor Inductive-Excited Synchronous Motor” (I2SM), ZF claims its concept is more compact and power dense than other magnet-free motors.
