Scania opens battery assembly plant in Södertälje

Battery assembly plant in Södertälje, Sweden

Sweden Scania AB, a subsidiary of the Traton Group based in Södertälje, Sweden, has launched production of battery packs for heavy-duty electric vehicles at a new plant next to its headquarters.

The new battery assembly plant is 18,000 square metres and represents an investment of SEK1.5bn. Battery cells sourced from partner Northvolt are assembled into modules, and those modules in turn are placed in battery packs. These battery packs will then be installed in Scania’s electric trucks, which are produced at the chassis assembly facility nearby. The chassis assembly plant was recently redesigned to allow for parallel production of battery electric and combustion engine vehicles.
