Germany – A research project investigating the productivity gains from employing autonomous trucks in container logistics recently concluded, with test results showing efficiency increases of up to 40%, according to a press release from research participant MAN Truck & Bus SE of Munich, Bavaria.
The “Autonomous Innovation in Terminal Operations” (ANITA1) lasted three years, culminating in a six-month test in which a self-driving truck was put to work at a container terminal in Ulm, Baden-Württemberg. Deutsche Bahn operated the MAN truck, and the Hochschule Fresenius University of Applied Sciences and Götting KG helped in setting up and running the trial. The container terminal itself had to be prepared for the trial by programming the IT systems to communicate with the truck.
