BYD set to open a new factory in Brazil

Model of the new factory in Brazil

Brazil / China - BYD Co Ltd of Shenzhen, China has announced plans to invest USD 580 million into a new factory on the premises of an old Ford facility in Camaçari, Bahia, Brazil which closed in January 2021. BYD said the factory will consist of three separate facilities, one will focus on chassis production for the electric bus and truck market, the second will build electric passenger vehicles and the third, components for both commercial and passenger vehicles. Production at the new facility is set to begin by the end of 2024 and is anticipated to create 5,000 new jobs. This will be BYD’s second factory in Brazil with the first facility in Campinas, São Paulo opening in 2015. That facility currently is capable of producing 2,000 bus chassis per year.

The company sees a growing local demand for electric buses, with São Paulo’s largest bus operator, SPTrans, having committed to stop procuring new diesel buses by the end of 2024.
