USAPaccar Inc of Bellevue, Washington exhibited products and prototypes from its various brands at the Consumer Electronics Show – held 9-12 January in Las Vegas, Nevada – including Peterbilt’s ‘SuperTruck II’ and electric trucks fitted with the Toyota fuel cell powertrain.

Built for the U.S. Department of Energy’s SuperTruck II programme, the prototype truck, described by Paccar as a “testbed for future product technologies”, was developed in order to improve freight ton efficiency by 100% compared to a 2009 baseline. Peterbilt’s prototype overachieved with a 132% improvement as well as a 55% gain in brake thermal efficiency. It is powered by a mild hybrid powertrain and features a waste heat recovery system, a lightweight chassis, and numerous idiosyncrasies in cab design, including a central driving position with articulated seat that rotates left and right.
