ZF shelves autonomous shuttle, repositions as autonomous driving technology supplier

ZF GRT shuttle

Germany – At the end of last year, ZF Friedrichshafen AG of Friedrichshafen, Baden-Württemberg announced that it would stop marketing its autonomous transit shuttles, while continuing to develop existing shuttle projects and to offer engineering services to third parties working on self-driving vehicles.

The company announced that, given ongoing market pressures and the high cost of transitioning to electric vehicles, as well as a slower-than-anticipated development of the market for autonomous shuttles, it could no longer justify the high upfront investments required to further develop its autonomous shuttle. As a result, ZF has decided to reposition itself exclusively as a “premium supplier for autonomous driving technology” in the passenger car and commercial vehicle segments.
