Volvo NA releases details of redesigned engine and transmission for new VNL truck

Volvo D13 engine

USA – Following its announcement of the ‘VNL’ redesign, Volvo Group North America Inc of Greensboro, North Carolina has released further details of the new ‘D13’ engine and ‘I-Shift’ automated manual transmission which will come with the new VNL as standard.

Volvo NA has made multiple changes to the D13 heavy-duty engine. The number of “wave” pistons (patented by Volvo) is increased from six to seven, which the manufacturer claims provide “further directional control of the air and fuel mixture to create even more efficient combustion”. Moreover, the piston height has been shortened, and the connecting rod lengthened, in order to minimise cylinder sidewall pressure, thus decreasing friction and reducing parasitic losses.
