Kalmar and Forterra to develop self-driving terminal tractors

Kalmar-Forterra autonomous terminal tractor in operation

Finland / USACargotec subsidiary Kalmar of Helsinki, Finland has signed an agreement with Forterra of Clarksburg, Maryland, USA for the joint development of self-driving terminal tractors for automated container-handling operations.

As per the agreement, Kalmar will develop “automation-ready” terminal tractors – that is to say, a vehicle with integrated drive-by-wire which will allow for driving functions such as steering and braking to be controlled electronically. These tractors will be installed with Forterra’s self-driving technology, called ‘AutoDrive’. Using Kalmar’s own fleet management system, known as ‘Kalmar One’, the autonomous terminal tractors can be incorporated into normal operations and monitored remotely.
