Colombia - The TransMilenio system in the city of Bogotá, Colombia, claims to have the second largest electric bus fleet in Latin America, with over 1,600 vehicles (BYD since 2019 has supplied 1,553 units, Sunwin – 44, Marcopolo – 13, Zhongtong – 5 and Dongfeng – 2). The urban passenger transport service is surpassed only by RED Movilidad in Santiago, Chile, which has almost 2,000 electric buses.
This bus fleet of electric vehicles represents 18% of the total number of buses in the country and has been assembled in line with the country’s objective of there being no more vehicles powered by fossil fuels by 2040. Records from the TransMilenio system reveal that electric buses, despite having an acquisition cost equivalent to at least twice that of a diesel model, show that from the eighth year onwards the e-buses become more economical: On a cost per kilometer traveled for an electric model, it is equivalent to 30% of the cost of a diesel vehicle.
