Japan – The Ministry of Transport in Japan is considering introducing dedicated lanes for self-driving trucks on highways connecting major cities in the country, such as between Tokyo and Osaka, to help reduce congestion and address the country’s growing problem of driver shortages.

The ministry estimates that normal truck traffic on the Tokyo-Osaka route alone would be reduced by 35,000 vehicles per day if the project were to be implemented. It is currently preparing to launch a trial run on a short stretch of road for a limited time, with the aim of establishing permanent routes within ten years.
